DOLL ARTIST

Virginia Doll Artist Angela Khalifah, "Sister Angela", has been creating hand-made cloth dolls since 2018. Her collection of Freedom Culture Dolls was birthed from her love of art, history, fashion and rich culture. This Spirited collection of cloth dolls had its genesis on a 123-acre farm where she resides with her husband Bro. Khalifah in Southampton County, Virginia. Angela attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City where she majored in fashion design, thereafter, she served in various positions within the garment industry before forming her own garment manufacturing empire. As an Author, Doll Artist, and Instructor, she credits her parents for molding her creative journey. Family is her foundation for strength, inspiration, support, peace and love.

Freedom Culture Dolls have been on tour as a traveling Black Dolls Exhibit since 2022 teaching Black history through the lens of cloth dolls - in libraries, schools, churches, and private events. Freedom Culture Dolls preserves the visual legacy of a rich Black history that is gradually being erased from textbooks and curriculum nationwide.

Freedom Culture Dolls are one-of-a-kind and hand-made with Love. Sister Angela crafts each cloth doll individually, from skin tone, hair texture, to garments and accessories. Ancestral dolls are made in a reflection of you, family, and friends.

Freedom Culture Doll Fashions are created with unique fabrics sourced from around the world. From dresses, suits, pants, jackets, hats, handbags and accessories, each doll has a distinctive look. Garments are ready-made and custom available.

Studio Vibes

Melendona, designer and stylist, enjoys sewing, serving hair, nails, and wardrobe styling at the Museum. Dolls featuring fashions from the Melendona 'Afro Futuristic' collection are also available at the Gift Shop "Reflections Collection", featuring matching doll and adult garments. She brings a creative expression of art, fashion and culture.

Sankofa embodies the Spirit of reverence. A Ghanaian word that means "go back and fetch it." Sankofa symbolizes a quest for knowledge and the importance of learning from the past!

Preserving the Art of Hand Sewing

Hand sewing for beginners offers basic sewing instruction designed for youth and adults. Classes offered in March of 2026 at the FCD Museum. Registration opens in January 2026.
